That’s right, today (27/09/2011) is the day that the proverbial mango shaped eagle has landed! It’s been 11 months in the making and boy does it taste good.
Windows Phone 7.5, formally Mango, has focused on three key themes which can be summed up as “modern communication built in”, “a smarter way to app” and “internet beyond the browser”. Basically the themes mean that Windows Phone is now more focused on people and the ways in which we communicate with them making it very easy to chat to anyone, anywhere at anytime through Twitter and IM integration. In addition to being more people centric the phone also allows people to more easily discover apps for the phone and even pin specific parts of an app to the start screen. Finally, it will now also be easier and faster for users to browse the internet with 7.5 now packing Internet Explorer 9, just like on the PC, and bringing with it full hardware acceleration.
If you’re already a Windows Phone user then this is surely great news for you and it gets better as this update is completely free. Despite starting to roll the update out today Microsoft has said that not every device will be updated today but should be in the very near future. Microsoft has provided to tables to allow you to check when your phone should be getting the update; there’s an international version and a US only version.
When your phone is able to update you will need to have Zune installed on your PC and connect your phone to your computer and then follow the on screen instructions. I hope your update goes smoothly, from reading twitter it would appear that it should go very smoothly, even if you weren’t on an official build of Windows Phone.
In other Windows Phone news its not possible to browse the phone’s Marketplace in your browser and even view a map of where you have been with your phone. You can see a load of screenshots from the updated WindowsPhone.com site.
Windows Phone 7.5 certainly does look set to “put people first”.
