I have just received a very entertaining phone call which I think readers of my blog will really appreciate. I’ve written a transcript of how the conversation went.
Me: “Hello?”
Caller: “Hello, am I speaking to Mr Gillett?”
Me: “No, this is his son.”
Caller “ Ah ok, I am calling on behalf of Microsoft.”
Me: “Oh.” My face broke into a huge grin at this point.
Caller: “We have information that your PC has a virus as it’s broadband speed is slow.”
Me: “How do you know this?”
Caller: “We have information from your Internet Service Provider.”
Me: “Oh, my ISP gave you this information?”
Caller: “Who?”
Me: “My Internet Service Provider gave you this information?”
Caller: “Yes.”
Me: “Ok, who is my Internet Service Provider?”
Caller: “Due to data protection we can not give you that information.”
Me: “Oh, you can’t tell me who my own ISP is?”
Caller: “No sir.”
Me: “Ok, well what is the problem with my PC?”
Caller: “You have slow internet. This is caused by a virus on your computer.”
Me: “Really? I thought slow internet comes from the broadband to my house and nothing to do with my computer.”
Caller: “No sir. It is because of the virus.”
Me: “Ok, what virus do I have?”
Caller: “You have the Trojan Super Virus.”
Me: “I thought Trojans were a type of virus, not a specific virus.”
Caller: “You have a Trojan sir.”
Me: “Ok, what’s its name?”
Caller: “…*click*”
Me: “Oh, you’ve gone.”
Just to make sure, this was a scam and you should be very careful about this kind of conversation from someone.
