Bing UK have updated its news page to bring a lot more news to the page for quicker access to the news from around the world. Read more about this.
This new design is now like the US however the UK version misses the “Popular Now” links at the top and the weather of the current location. Microsoft have said of the new design that “with reading news one of the most popular online activities in the UK, the fresh and visual design of the new news browse page will feature even more UK sources to ensure even greater relevancy, as well as including pictures in each search result.” There are 10 categories for news accessed via the tabs at the top of the page.
Perhaps more interesting though is that Microsoft timed the launch of the new news page to “coincide with the latest UKOM/Nielsen survey which revealed that Bing News has now surpassed Google News in the UK in terms of readership”. I have not yet been able to find the results of this survey but that’s Microsoft have updated their post about the survey and Bing’s ranking within it, it’s an interesting statistic seeing as Google dominates the UK search market far more than it does in the US.
There has been some other interesting Bing news today where the search engine will power the English results of the Chinese search engine Baidu. China has 450 million internet users and plans to been an international search engine, this could be a very successful move by Microsoft. Reuters has more on this news.
