I have just been tipped off by Michael Lee, a Silverlight front-end developer, who is working on bring the Windows 8 look and experience to the browser. He has so far reached a point where the Windows 8 “emulator” works in the browser. This emulator is built using Silverlight and can be played with now, although there is little to do other than see the proof of concept.
Lee has told me that he plans for this to become more useful over time with it being a launcher for a user’s frequently visited sites. It will also be possible for users to customise the emulator and if a user is signed into services on the web then the emulator will be able to aggregate content from those services. Lee hopes that this aggregation will allow a user’s friends and contacts to populate the people section of the emulator.
This is a pretty good representation of Windows 8 for the browser and along with the Windows 8 Rainmeter theme, Omnimo 4, I think it will go some way to keeping those who can’t wait for Windows 8 content until the public beta is made available.
Do let me know if you know of any other Microsoft inspired projects that I might not know about.
