I just thought I’d finish off my Windows Phone Mango posts with one that looks briefly at what Mango means to other Microsoft products. Read my thoughts on Mango or see Mango in pictures.
I think the product that we can see the most new things is with Windows Live. Windows Live is used as the service that all integrated services come to Windows Phone through. Therefore, the new Facebook integration with the calendar on Windows Phone is likely to also happen on the Windows Live Calendar, something that I am looking forward too.
I also wonder that with the speculated inclusion of pretty much all IM services to Windows Phone whether Windows Live will be partnering up with AOL to integrate AIM into the IM service. Then of course there is also Twitter and LinkedIn integration that will, in theory, have to be added as services to Windows Live to get the integration on one’s phone. This could mean that Tweets can be read in the social pane on Windows Live Messenger. I wonder if the groups idea will be mirrored with the groups on Windows Live Messenger allowing a user to do more than just send an IM or email to the entire group but to see what’s new with them and maybe also send them all a text.
Another interesting thing to note is that the Office hub will now show PDFs which, as far I am concerned, adds to the rumours of an inbuilt PDF reader in Windows 8. Whilst we are on the subject of Windows 8 I imagine that the web based version of the Windows Phone Marketplace will be used as a test version of a similar marketplace for Windows 8.
There has been talk that Mango will allow music to be streamed from SkyDrive, I would hope this to be true but the image that caused this rumour shows functionality that already exists in Windows Phone so I’m not sure if that feature is actually likely to happen. I imagine any announcement that could include information about new entertainment features for Windows Phone will be made at E3.
A final thing that could well make an appearance in some Microsoft products is the voice controls that are becoming more prominent in Windows Phone. Windows 8 is likely to have in built support for Kinect which in tern means voice control and I expect some of the uses of it in Windows Phone will be similar to the uses in Windows 8.
Have I missed any extra features that could be included in other Microsoft products?
