Earlier in the week I had a look at the new design for the Microsoft.com homepage that they are currently previewing. The process of previewing is for people to give their feedback on the proposed design.
On first viewing I think the new design is too cluttered, there are too many columns but I like that “home” and “work” are being separated into two distinct sections.
Below is my tweaked design for the homepage.
My tweaks make two columns not three and use the Segoe UI font more along with blocks of colour likes those found in the Metro UI design. by having two columns the site looks less cluttered and allows more room for the showcase area (with the Windows Phone 7 in this case). The “work” section is now below the “home” section and could be switched by clicking the “work” banner. i left the next two sections pretty much unchanged, however I did colour code the Windows, Office, Xbox and Windows Phone sections in the “How to” section and added the icon. This helps differentiate the different products much easier than is possible in the current design. I also added Xbox and Windows Phone to the top navigation bar.
My tweaks aren’t perfect as I cobbled it together in a few minutes I had free. What do you think though? Any other suggestions?
