Microsoft have just announced, at a press conference before the main keynote, that the next version of Windows will run on the ARM “System on a Chip” (SoC) architecture found in smaller, more mobile and energy efficient devices. This will allow Windows to run on a larger range of devices and should allow Windows machines to be powered for much longer than current computers between charges. This could see many small devices like tablets and handheld devices being powered by Windows, rather than perhaps Windows Embedded or Android.
A few demos were shown off of an early build of the next version of Windows running on some SoCs, IE9 and full hardware acceleration were also shown off. The build that was shown off was 6.2.7667 which is thought to be a Milestone 1 version, rumours suggest Microsoft is already working on a Milestone 3 build of the OS.
Microsoft also showed off a new version of Surface, Surface 2.0. The device features a thin screen rather than a big box (as seen below) and can now be mounted. The screen uses a different technology so that each pixel is actually a sensor which I guess makes it more precise and allows better applications to be used.

It will be interesting to see what else Microsoft announces later on, sadly I will be fast asleep for the keynote.
