Apple’s media event yesterday saw the arrival of a music orientated social network, Ping. However, the event also disappointed some as the rumours, as is often the case, were more exciting than what Apple actually announced. Some rumours were along the lines of music streaming of the vast collection of music Apple has. Do you know what service has had a music focused social network and music streaming functionality for some time? Zune.
Apple also announced a rehashed Apple TV which allows streaming of films on your TV but to do this you have to have iTunes running on a PC or Mac in your network before you do anything with the set top box. Guess what service allows you watch whatever program or film (so long as its in the marketplace) you like on your TV if you have purchased it. That’s right Zune.
Then there are increasing rumours about Google planning to announce and launch a music service over the coming months which may or may not allow users to stream music on any device and does not currently have any record labels signed up to it. I expect you know where I am going with this… which service currently provides music streaming for mobile devices (Zune HDs and KINs), PCs and TVs? Zune.
There are other positives in Zune’s favour too such as its integration on the highly anticipated Windows Phone 7 devices, its Zune Pass feature allowing users to listen to as much music they like a month and the fact that users can buy (or rent) a song, TV show or film on any platform and play it on any other one when they like.
There are, however, a few complaints with Zune; its really only available in the US and doesn’t have such a vast catalogue of music as Apple does. But you would think that with only a small number of cons to the service that actually it would be a popular brand of consumers and commentators alike as it provides many features people want to see in other entertainment services. But its not.
Reading most tech blogs today I see no mention of Zune at all, despite offers some of the features that iTunes and Ping offer, allowing better streaming than Apple announced with its Air Play feature for iOS devices and providing users with some of the most hotly discussed rumours for Apple to announce. There is in fact more talk of Google unannounced music service and how that will compete with iTunes and Apple than there is about Zune and how well that currently competes.
I have now got fed up of the media’s lack of coverage of Zune, it doesn’t have to be gushing affection for the entertainment services but at least compare what it does with its current and future competitors. Therefore I have come to the conclusion that we the Microsoft follows (not necessarily lovers of the service) should rally behind Zune and publish a shed load of articles this coming Monday (6th). These articles can be news, reviews, hopes, rumours, speculation, wish lists etc etc, pretty much anything that can help raise Zune’s profile even if just for a day.
I hope that some of the Zune focused sites and communities can help out with this and even independent bloggers who may or may not work for Microsoft. You know you want to help out.
