MSN have today unveiled a new online magazine like site aimed at women in the US, now I am not that interested in the content of the site but more the way the site is designed; which I think is nothing short of great.
The site works by being made up of lots of “pages” which are accessed by scrolling down the site, these “pages” replicate a magazine’s page with photos, information and adverts. However most of the media on the “page” is interactive, generally its not one photo but several with its own information and advert. The article can then be shared using social networks or added to the Scrapbook. The Scrapbook is the collection of images on the left of the image in which the user can pin interesting content from the Glo site to refer back to later.
In between each “page” is either a quote and accompanying link to a Bing search or a poll which serves to separate the “pages” but to also get a greater interaction with the reader. At the top of the page is quick access to many sections of the MSN websites but below that is a navigation bar only for Glo which, when clicked, takes the user to the top of the page and shows them the latest content about what they have chosen in a very clean way. “More glo” offers a drop down list of image for the user to quickly explore and the Bing search results are also displayed on the same page.
What I found impressive about this site is how much like a physical magazine it looks but at the same time its a true online media site with galleries, slideshows and videos. Another interesting aspect of this site is that not once did the page reload when browsing it, everything appears and moves around on the site rather than directing the user to another site.
As I said i am not interested in the content of the Glo site but I am interested in how well this does as it could pave the way for more magazine-like sites from MSN with content that does appeal to me. This is also one of the most convincing sites I have found for browsing the web on a tablet device; the more like a real magazine website become the most I want to browse then on a tablet device.
You can find out more about Glo in the press release.
