New MSN Begins Rolling Out

If you are in the US and use MSN you may start noticing a major change to the website as Microsoft starts rolling out the new MSN which does away with the look and feel of the older cluttered design for a much cleaner, simpler design which you can test out here. Just under a week ago Microsoft said that the new MSN would be coming soon, glad to see it released so soon.

The MSN team have just posted an article which stats the roll out has began and follows several months of testing with “over 70,000 pieces of customer feedback and introducing over 30 updates”. I really like the new design for MSN and hope that it will come to the UK soon.

In the article the team have also highlight some of the new features which are organised under the headers below, I have summarised the content.

  • Bing, Bing, and more Bing
Quite impressively Bing has experienced a double-digit increase in queries on the preview version of MSN so the team have made sure Bing is very prominently placed in the new design
  • Local is a home run
The new local edition of MSN pulls data from Bing, MSNBC and Fox Sports to provide a user with lots of local information with the preview version attracting 5 million users, 40% of which return on a daily basis
  • You love images and news
The team have made more of images and videos on the new design to highlight articles and have made it quicker to watch videos with “minimal buffering”
  • Social networking is handy to have on the homepage
One of the, potentially, biggest features of the new MSN page is the social network tab that will allow users quick access to Hotmail, Twitter and Facebook.

Also included in the article were several videos from members of the MSN talking about various features. The videos are of

  • Erik Jorgensen, Corporate Vice President, MSN, who discusses the launch of the new MSN homepage
  • Bob Visse, General Manager, MSN Product Management, discusses the partnership between Bing and MSN on the new homepage
  • Scott Moore, General Manager, Content & Programming, MSN, discusses what the team learned during the preview period and feedback he’s heard from customers and advertisers
  • Cyrus Krohn, Director, MSN Local Edition, talks about the run-away hit of MSN Local Edition
