Zune Software Update Brings New Features
Zune services have been down for the past few hours but there is now an update for your Zune PC Software bringing this version to 4.2.202.0 and it has a few new features.
Zune Software now supports Windows 7 Libraries so its easier for you to access all your media collections through the Zune software. You can also that the update adds a new Library to Windows 7, Podcasts, it even comes with its own icon for the Library.
I am not sure about this but the software feels a bit snappier to me too, always a welcome improvement. There may be some other additions to the software with this update so if you see any please let me know.
Update: Information about Zune possibly going international with this update and news about the “Zune Phone“.
Update 2: As pointed out by Nick in the comments the Zune Software can now play .avi files, a welcome addition to many I am sure. Further to my post about a new international version of the Zune Software I have also found that the Zune team left part of the Smart DJ feature in the software.

Everyone else making notes on the 4.2 release got stuck on the phone thing. Thanks for pointing out the Podcasts library! I’m posted a similar entry on my own blog, linking back here. Many thanks.

Thanks Nick for the tip, added that info to the post.
Well I had posted this before the “Zune Phone” info came out, it was a close thing though, otherwise I might have been more inclinded to focus on that, lol.

It plays AVI’s, but it does not play ALL AVI’s :( Now I get to dig through my library and try and figure out which is which. Not really a complaint as I’ve dieing for them to put AVI compatibility in, but a twitch more would have been nice too. All that time to figure out which it will and which it wont THEN to convert all the ones it wont AGAIN *sigh* Guess you have to take the bad with the good sometimes ;)

They’ve changed the default color of items with no album art in QuickPlay to black (used to be pink)… nicer overall, and better on the eyes.

I do not think a worse piece of software could have been written. I have been unable to to update the zune software on my PC. As luck would have it the Zune was a gift so replaceing it with a unit that works and can be synchronized with and media player will be a welcome change.

That’s a shame that you’ve had such a bad experience and I have to say yours is perhaps the first case I have heard where someone has such a bad time with the Zune software.
