With talk of a Zune app coming to Windows Mobile, a potential “Zune Phone” and Windows Mobile 7 I was wondering how these fit in with Microsoft’s 3 screens (PC, mobile and TV) and the cloud strategy.
I have scored each of Microsoft’s main consumer offerings as to how well I think they meet the aim, total is 4.
Windows
2.5 Screens and the Cloud – Total Score 3.5
- PC Screen – Windows 7 + Windows Live – 1
- Mobile Screen – Windows Mobile + Limited Windows Live – 1 (just)
- TV Screen – By using a PC connected to a TV, definitely not mainstream. Perhaps if Windows Live does come to the TV it can increase the score – 1.5
- The Cloud – Windows Azure – 1
Office
2 Screens and the Cloud – Total Score 3
- PC Screen – Office 2007 (2010) – 1
- Mobile Screen – Office for mobile – 1
- TV Screen – Nothing – 0
- The Cloud – Soon Microsoft will release the Office Web Apps – 1
Zune
2 Screens and the Cloud – Total Score 3
- PC Screen – Zune PC Software – 1
- Mobile Screen – Zune HD, not a truly mobile device – 0.5
- TV Screen – Access to movies through Zune for the Xbox, would be better if Music was added to the service too – 0.5
- The Cloud – With a Zune Pass users can listen to any music online – 1
Xbox & Xbox Live
1.5 Screens and part of the cloud – Total Score 2
- PC Screen – Games for Windows Live, limited connection with Xbox Live – 0.5
- Mobile Screen – Nothing – 0
- TV Screen – Xbox 360 and Xbox Live – 1
- The Cloud – Multiplayer and social network integration is good but no way to play games within a browser – 0.5
So out of a potential score of 16 Microsoft currently have 10.5, its a a bit disappointing really. However as I said at the beginning with talk of a Zune app for Mobile and maybe even Xbox Live for Mobile to be announced at Mobile World Congress next month Microsoft could easily add 1.5 to their score. Who knows what else they might have up their sleeve for their consumer products in 2010, if the rumours are to be believed Microsoft seems pretty keen to make a noticabe impact on the consumer market this year.
How many point out of 16 do you think Microsoft has currently got?
